![]() It's believed that Spanish ships first discovered Nootka Sound as early as 1774, but it wasn't until 1778 that the first documented interaction with the area and its inhabitants took place, when British explorer Captain James Cook bartered for fur with the Mowachaht. (Today, the term refers to all the aboriginal tribes of western Vancouver Island, including the Mowachaht, who traded with the sound's first European visitors.) As noted in the intro to John Jewitt's White Slaves of Maquinna, the Nuu-chah-nulth were likely people "who had crossed the Bering Strait about 12,000 years ago." I would highly recommend this trip to anyone.Nootka Sound was first populated by the Nuu-chah-nulth, a name you should recognize from Taboo as the tribe of Delaney's late mother. All of the crew members are very friendly and willing to answer any questions, they will also inform you if they see any wildlife. If you are lucky enough to visit when it is a warm day you should sit/lie down on the beach, the sun warms the pebbles and it is just a marvelous feeling with the waves crashing on beach it doesn't get any better than that. Then you must keep going and go a short, steep trail to what is called Pebble Beach which is on the open Pacific ocean. Because a friend of mine had been on the trip before I knew after getting off the boat to follow the trail up and over a hill where you can do a self-guided tour of a old church. The best part was at Friendly cove where you are allowed off the boat for awhile (an hour and half I think). It was amazing, we had beautiful warm weather for most of the trip, on the way back it started to rain but that was okay. I took my mother on the Nootka sound day trip.
